Setting up a Gmail Account

As you graduate and place yourself on the job market, or as you get closer to this point, it is vitally important that you present a professional persona of yourself, online and in person. One way you can – and should – do this is to a) set up a professional email account outside of your undergraduate email account or b) set up a professional email account to which you forward your undergraduate email account. Gmail is such a program.

Gmail allows a higher degree of formatting than your Purdue account. Additionally, many professionals use Gmail (or a similar email account that includes such formatting features). Consequently, when you use a Gmail account and send an email with more formal or professional formatting, it will show up on similar email programs.

Therefore, I require that you set up a Gmail account for yourself for this course and either a) forward your undergraduate email account to your Gmail account or b) do not forward your university email account, but create a Gmail account as an additional email – and email me your Gmail address.

  • Follow through with the instructions, making sure you choose a professional email user name.
  • Send yourself a test email from your original account.
