Jo Doran, Ph.D., M.F.A.

Assistant Professor & ESL Coordinator, Northern Michigan University


I earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University in Rhetoric & Composition with Secondaries in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Writing Center Administration in 2013.

I also earned an MFA in Creative Writing/Poetry from Western Michigan University in 2005.

Until June 30, 2015, I was an Associate Professor and the ESL Coordinator at Northern Michigan University (NMU). Previously, I was a Contingent Assistant Professor at NMU, where I taught courses in writing, senior capstone (which I redesigned), genre, and technical and professional writing.

I have thirteen years of experience teaching at the university level and one year of experience as a research assistant in Women’s Studies. Additionally, I have twelve years of experience as a tutor (undergraduate, graduate, and ESL) in writing centers at Purdue University, Northern Michigan University, Henry Ford Community College, and Western Michigan University.

Service Areas: My service areas include working with L2 students in assigned academic environments and/or on a volunteer basis.

Teaching Areas: My teaching areas include working with first- and second-language learners in any area/level of writing.

Research Areas: My research areas include rhetoric and language socialization applied to L2 students, both graduate and undergraduate. I am interested in cultural implications in learning – and teaching – L2 students. Additionally, I am interested in the successes/failures of academic discourse-community maneuvers made by L2 students and increasing those successes.

Two Gals & a Pen

I have been editing/proofing academic and work-related texts for nine years.  I am very experienced in academic writing (dissertations, scientific papers,  journal articles, etc.), technical papers, book proposals, magazine articles, novels, non-fiction pieces, poetry, MLA and APA. Most of my work comes from word-of-mouth referrals from previous customers.

I have taught technical and professional business writing for five years at Purdue University and and two years at Northern Michigan University. I require that my students work on service-learning projects with real-world clients, usually local non-profit organizations, which keeps me up-to-date with current business writing/issues.
